Wednesday (Post SDR day 20, post hamstrings day 1!)

It won't surprise you to hear that we were late for our 8.30am therapy session! However, the night hadn't actually been as bad as we had expected, and Daniel was in good spirits when he woke this morning and saw that the toothfairy had been (again!) We dosed him up on his pre-therapy meds from 6.30am onwards (both the powerful pain relief one and the muscle relaxant) and therapy was actually not too stressful at all. Barrie (who was standing in for Jackie today) took things very gently; her aim was just to get his hamstrings working a bit again, so she stretched them out a little and then had him on his back straightening his own legs and then bending them again.

And then the same on his front...

However, after a while she realised that he was about to drift off to sleep (possibly just a side effect of the drugs, possibly due to tiredness), so then he moved to doing some sitting on the bench, and a little bit of weight-bearing. As you will imagine, standing is a bit scary when you have just had your hamstrings operated on, right by your knees, so he was a bit reluctant to bear his own weight. However, he was sufficiently distracted by the Angry Birds puzzle (there's something for everyone in that therapy department) that he managed a little standing with support....

and then pushed up a little bit more....

We returned to the hotel to find a package waiting, with lego for both the children from the Townsend family - thank you so much to Lily, Lottie and Freddie (and of course Ali and Nigel). They were absolutely thrilled and a happy couple of hours of playing followed.

Rich and Lucy went out to do a food shop before lunch, and we were planning to go out as a family this afternoon. However, we ended up staying in the apartment and just chilling out. I have to admit that the reason for that was nothing to do with Daniel, who as long as he is dosed up on his painkillers, is like this....

Our lazy afternoon was much more because the rest of us felt totally whacked after yesterday, and by late afternoon Rich and Lucy were like this......

We went down to the social evening downstairs, where Daniel ate a huge tea, much to our surprise. We then dosed him up again and popped him into bed, where he was still chattering happily. Today has hugely exceeded our expectations - let's hope he can get a decent sleep and have more of the same tomorrow.
